Event Summary

Chingthur Foundation conducted hands-on biochar production training for its staff and two interns from North East Christian University. Mr. Lungaithui Malangmei, Programme Manager of Chingthur Foundation, facilitated the session at the Agroforestry Training Centre in Karagaon.

The training introduced the Top-Lit Updraft, or TLUD, method for producing biochar from locally available biomass. Participants prepared a drum reactor with a fitted lid, chimney and carefully positioned air holes. Dry biomass, mainly bamboo, was loaded into the drum and ignited from the top. Controlled airflow allowed the material to convert into char rather than burn completely into ash.

After about one hour, the char was rapidly quenched with water to stop further combustion. Participants observed the full process and learned how a simple, locally constructed system can turn biomass into a useful soil amendment.

Key Outcomes

The session built practical understanding of small-scale biochar production. When properly produced and applied, biochar can support soil health and moisture retention while creating a productive use for locally available biomass.
